FOR THE LOVE OF POETRY

For years we have felt that poetry should comprise of stanzas made up of words and phrases that rhyme. However this class had given us a greater insight into the formation of poems. We established that poems are used to express ideas and feelings , as well as tell of a story. At the end of the class we were all more confident to create beautiful poetic pieces riddled with carefully formed stanzas and poetic flow. The lecturer had us recreate a cinquain as a class and each of us were given the responsibility to draft our own haiku. But before we did this we had to find out what a cinquain was, as this was a new word in our mental word collection. This was a stanza made up of five lines. Thus we were able to formulate a short cinquain that met the approval of the class. Unaware that poem had varieties, we were introduced to 4 types of poems, which were; ballads. narrative poems, limericks and the haiku.

But of interest to us was this newly learnt one; the haiku. After learning about this type of poem was one which made up of seventeen syllables, following a 5:7:5 syllable pattern, we recognized that if would be a fun poem to use in the classroom to help them identify the syllabic pattern in this kind of poem. We thought of asking the students to clap as they read each line. The use of commas in this type of poetry allows us to maintain appropriate pausing while reading this poem so that the rhythm would not be lost and the pattern could be easily identified.

As a group we came up with a nice Haiku that was actually a part of a song. We found it amusing and amazing that some songs contained haikus.

Winter, Spring Summer and Fall (5 words)
All you have to do is call              (7 words)
And I will be there !!                  (5 words)

However we had to revisit the requirements of a haiku and realized that emphasis should be placed on the syllabic and not word pattern. Therefore we tweaked our previously done conceptualization of a haiku and came up with a correct one:

Winter, Spring, Summer          (5 syllables)
Reminds me of my mother      (7 syllables)
I love her so much!!               (5 syllables)

Thinking of this haiku really impressed on our minds the need to differentiate between word patterns and syllable pattern. As a result we believe that using poem, and particularly haikus could be a good introduction to show the students that one word can have multiple syllables.

BELOW IS A VIDEO WHICH SHOWS HOW ANYONE CAN CREATE A HAIKU!!!!!!!

  1. I must agree that this class was very informative. Poetry does have a place in every subject across the curriculum. Students love the bears and rhymes which are so easy to recite and makes the recalling of information so easy.

  5. Many persons are of the opinion that poems should contain rhyming couplets. This concept is probably the biggest poetry misconception. It is refreshing to see that you are highlighting this point in your post.

In relation to your two poems, I really enjoyed them. I foresee myself using these pieces during my teaching of poetry writing.
    Excellent post!

  6. i like how you bring out the simplicity of poetry writing. Most persons do not like poetry because of their exposure to it and because of their ignorance on the other forms or types of poems. I think that students should be exposed to different forms so that they can develop a liking for poetry and writing.

  7. Students learn in different ways, however when children can hear a rhythm or see a pattern in something, it is remembered easier. As an adult learner, it is the same for me at times; reading something in a poem makes it easier to remember. Hence, as the caption in this states for the love of poetry I believe that the different types of poetry should be incorporated in the classroom. When students are given the opportunity to be creative and play with words, learning becomes fun. A timely piece as we prepare for the classroom.

    1. I share the same sentiments Abigail. It is important to utilize and incorporate different methods in the teaching and learning process. The students are different and do not grasp content in the same way or at the same time. Being a creative teacher will be one way to do justice with the content we share in the classroom.

Very good blog guys! The information is informative and the video is excellent.

  8. Good blog! The embedded video added some richness to it.I concur that this lesson was very informative and helped us clarify many misconceptions that we had of this genre. We also discovered how poetry can be integrated in our classrooms as assessment tools, supplementary instructional tools and transitions into activities other than its only perceived purpose, entertainment.

  9. I agree to Abigail's comment where she stated that the rhyme and rhythm in poems allow younger students to retain the concepts taught. Teachers should be cognizant of this fact and utilize poems as often as possible but not forgoing the other genres of writing. Teachers can utilize poetry in the classroom for many reasons. For example, to gain students interest for content to be learnt poems can be introduced at the beginning of poems.
I thought that poem writing was difficult because of the misconceptions were created. I thought all poems must rhyme, be written using formal or standard language which made poem writing difficult. This session taught me otherwise and now I am proud to say that I love writing poems especially for the content areas.
